As a Gallup® Certified Strengths Coach, I am a strategic, discerning, and action-oriented champion for others. Thoughtfully helping people uncover and understand their strengths, growing their self-awareness, and co-creating a roadmap for success - one that includes personal values and leads you closer towards your goals and dreams - is meaningful to me and to those with whom I work. Creating clear and effective pathways forward and implementing impactful solutions energizes me each day. I value the process of helping people discover empowering opportunities that result in learning, development, and growth. Amplifying and elevating the best in people is what I do.
Education:
MBA, University of San Francisco
BS, Managerial Economics, University of California, Davis
In the beginning...
As a Korean-American who came to the United States at the age of two, there were only two future professional options I was given. You know which two! So at the tender age of seven, I thought my future was to become a doctor. Being a daughter of immigrant parents, and growing up under the pressures of the "model minority" stereotype, came with specific expectations. Many of you are familiar with this story line and nodding your head right now.
After many years of taking math and science classes, it became clear at the college level that I was not naturally gifted in those areas. Because I had spent so many years trying to pursue a goal that was not in line with my strengths, I slogged through many undergraduate courses which I didn't enjoy, changed my major to something that seemed practical and achievable, but was remiss in exploring other options.
If only I had a gifted sounding board who could help me see more clearly.
Discovering Some Pillars...
Engaging in meaningful work is a key value in my life, so I quietly worked in the nonprofit sector for over two decades. As I developed friendships with colleagues and others in my community, I connected with them regarding their learning and development. Although I had very little interest in exploring career opportunities for myself, I had a natural curiosity and interest for what friends and colleagues were pursuing and passionate about.
Being a champion and advocate for others is like oxygen to me because it simply feels like breathing. I didn't realize this about myself until I finally looked in the mirror and...
I learned about me:
CliftonStrengths® - My Top 10: Strategic® | Relator® | Achiever® | Responsibility® | Learner® | Intellection® | Developer® | Belief® | Connectedness® | Discipline®
Myers–Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): INFJ The Advocate - the rarest type!
Along came a Pillar...
One extraordinary and trusted thought partner had a tremendous impact in my life because her Developer® strength led her to identify ways that I operated differently... ways that seemed unnoticeable from my perspective because it often feels effortless when you are operating in your sweet spots. She calls me her mentor and I call her mine.
Reflecting on the valuable feedback I received from a handful of thought partners, taking a closer look at the unique pillars in my life, working towards an MBA, and being certified as a Gallup® CliftonStrengths® Coach all pointed to how much I enjoy helping develop others - to live out their strengths, find ways to thrive, and pursue their goals. In fact, I had been doing this all along, for many years, without even knowing that Developer® is #7 of my top 10 CliftonStrengths®!
The name OUR PILLARS is significant to me because my dad gave me my Korean birth name - a name that means: wise pillar. I guess he was onto something. In addition, my experience of trying to work upstream and finally finding the value in identifying the unique pillars in my life has been the turning point I needed. These pillars include my CliftonStrengths®, my faith and values, trusted thought partners, and much more.
Above is a pencil drawing from my nephew (pseudonym Dante Son of Saru). Years ago, as he was exploring and developing his love for art, I wanted to be supportive of his artistic pursuits. I gave him his first paid artwork gig and asked him to draw something that would reflect me as someone who helps make connections for others. Days before he handed me his artwork, I had already decided on the name OUR PILLARS. To see that he placed me on top of a pillar reminded me of the fact that life is mysterious and beautiful. As they say, you can't make this stuff up!
As we engage together,
I hope you will embrace
your pillars too.
Thank you for your interest in
OUR PILLARS.
I look forward to
connecting with you.
